CARRERA ASTON MAYHEM

The Limited Edition Aston Martin DB3

Carrera has brought us a lot of interesting cars this past year, they have a style all their own and it shows in just about every car they produce. This Limited Edition product is no exception, and depending on your involvement and interests in the hobby, you may or may not be inclined to purchase Limited Edition cars, but to tell the truth, I would have bought this car regardless of that status.

The car is very striking with the colors and artwork chosen for its livery. Markings and paint on this model are very good, with no visible runs or faded color upon inspection. Body detail is crisp, mold lines; shape and finish all are at a high standard. No matter how I look at it, this car just stands out as a looker, and lets not forget the passengers. A rather healthy redhead and a Shaggy dog, both with their hair blowing in the "wind" as they wind their way down a mountain road, enjoying the scenery and the drive.

The chassis on this car is well done. Nice body fit, with no binding, a 3 screw mounting with the 3rd screw underneath the guide flag, removal of the guide flag is necessary to remove this screw. Carrera has employed its VMS (Variable Magnet System) in this car like it has its other releases allowing you to adjust magnetic down-force. At first glance, you don’t think this really has any effect, but it does change the handling of the car, so sliding it forward or aft to where you enjoy driving it is as simple as it can be.

Under the hood, you will find a front motor/drive-shaft setup similar to Fly’s. A spring mounted shaft delivers power to the inline gears. This system works well here, and tests of this car proved a quiet, responsive car. Very smooth in fact, I was impressed with its throttle response and how quiet this car tooled around the track.

The wheels and tires on this model were very nice, no noticeable out of round action, and the tires being slicks, provided more grip than I expected. No wobbling or hopping on any throttle range with braking action smooth, yet noticeable. Cornering is better than you might expect. This car hugs the curves pretty well with some tail out action allowing you to recover when that inadvertent spin.

In closing, this car is as fun to drive, as it is to look at. Collectors will want this car soon as it has already become hard to find. Dedicated racers may pass on this one, but Carrera offers this car in 2 other racing liveries, and this review applies to these as well when it comes to chassis, motor, and handling. For the enthusiast who enjoys classic racing on his/her layout, a pair of these would be in order. Carrera offers the slot car enthusiast a lot of options in their line-up, and this car would be a great addition to your collection.
