B-NOVA Guide Conversion Part 2

Older Release Carrera Classic NASCAR Chassis

The chassis for the older models has a different guide system. You will need to remove the old guide tongue and do some other sanding to make this work.

Chassis are close to the same and the same techniques are used. We are doing the Ford chassis in this article.

Sand away the areas shown. Test fit the ring to guide you. I used a Dremel with sanding barrel attachment. if you dot have one, get one. If you are going to start chassis modifications like this, you will need tools to get the job done.

I used Evergreen styrene sheet #9080. You want it this thick for strength. test fit and trim it until it looks like the above photo. Then use superglue to hold it in place.

Place the ring/sleeve as shown above making sure it sits flush on the new styrene sheet.

Remove the interior of the plastic as shown. Here is where that new Dremel of yours comes in handy again.

Sand until you are pretty flush with the ring. Then use and exacto hobby knife and do the fine adjustments. Test fit the guide holder to make sure it is snug, but free enough to move up and down so you can set the height easily.

Install your guide with braid. In this example we are using a Slot.it clip in guide.

Place the chassis with the front wheel assembly installed on a setup block. If you do not have a setup block, use a section of track or you can do it right on your layout. Press the guide holder down until it is where you want it. I like it so that the tires just barely touch. This way I can sand the fronts to true them and the tripod will be set about as good as it gets.

Once it is set, add adhesive around the lip of the ring. You are finished. Install your wire to the guide and motor and get ready to test run it.

I suggest ordering guide shims to fine tune your models. Slot Car Corner has some very nice ones here.

There are plenty of these models out there and with new after-market parts, you can make them just as smooth and fast as a new release.
