Budget Beetles!

I have always had a soft spot for these little models, I freely admit it. I know they are not for everyone, but when Fantasy World announced that these models were going on Special, I wanted to get a pair that I had passed on and add to my collection. These models are not at the detail standards we might see today, however don't think that they cannot be tuned for some fun, satisfying racing.

First and foremost, I like to collect models that are sometimes unique and these certainly qualify. In the past when a car is released with any type of sirens on top, such as the Ninco Mercedes Safety car and some of the older Scalextric Limiteds, I grab them up. No, I can't explain why. Both of these models have the working siren that lights when you accelerate, and for me that just adds to the fun. Fit and finish on these models are actually pretty good with an even clear-coat through-out the model. The interiors, although not super-detailed still have both driver and a female passenger, and sitting on the track they look just fine to me.

2 screws are easily removed from under the chassis for body mounting, although be careful you do not break the wires running to the sirens. You might see that you pulled the siren inside the body a little upon removal, if you do, carefully use a needle-nose pliers and pull it back in place. The interesting thing about these models is the fact that they differ from other later releases because they do not come with a magnet, and that the motor is the smaller strap design type as similar to those in the Ninco Karts. This little motor is more than enough on these small models, especially without the magnets.

Performance of these little models are not what you might expect, and they really are better suited for the enthusiasts who enjoy tuning. The rear tires do need to be sanded and trued for best results, and adding some weight up front also is advised. Without weight or magnets, the front end does have a noticeable "hop" to it, which can effect contact with the rails. I added some lead weight used for balancing wheels in the front, and this helped things a great deal.

Once you tune them, prepare yourself for some great sliding fun. We can consistently slide these bugs all the way around our corners, and even carry that slide for almost 2 straights! For some of us, this kind of racing is some of the most fun we can have, and when you feel like a break from "normal" racing, try pulling out these for some light-hearted paint trading.

As stated above, these are not for every enthusiast. However given the price I think you might try giving them another look, especially if you are into tuning and like a challenge once in a while. I find these little bugs a great deal of fun, and to my surprise so do many who visit here. I think these models offer a good value for those on tighter slot-budgets, and if you fall into that category, I advise you grab a pair and see for yourself.
