Carrera 1/24th Scale

Limited Edition Jaguar E-Type

Not long ago I had the pleasure of testing the new Blacktop Racers Exclusiv 1/24th scale set from Carrera. In it, there were 2 of the new models being released, a Corvette and Jaguar E-type. Now, I am a big American muscle car fan, and as much as I liked the way the Vette handled, the Jaguar really impressed me.

Shortly after this, the Limited Editions of both these models were revealed and I knew I had to get them. After debating which one to get first, I chose the  Jaguar, with the Corvette to follow. I thought the model was striking in its livery, and couldn't wait for it to arrive. I didn't expect it to run much differently than the regular models, in fact, I counted on it.

Arriving here safe and sound, I couldn't wait to drive it on our recently finished Carrera Oval. Taking a closer look at this model made me glad I chose it first. All the mold lines were clean, and overall fit and finish was excellent. The Tampo-stamped markings were well done, however I did notice some gaps in the number markings. Still, it wasn't too offensive, and for me it didn't detract too much from the overall look of the model. An even, dust-free clear-coat sealed all this nicely as well.

The full interior has a decent amount of detail with gauges and driver being well done. The glass and chrome had an even fit, and I didn't notice any excess flashing or peeling. Wheels and tires were very round and true, and although they are not as wide as you might want, they provided a decent amount of grip. Underneath you find the magnet in the middle of the chassis. The magnet is adjustable by simply  removing the 2 small Phillips head screws, and flipping the magnet over. There are actually 2 magnets inside this pocket, one being thicker than the other. I only noticed a slight difference in handling, but it was noticeable. The cars come with the stronger side of the magnet (with red dot) towards the track, so unless you want even less magnetic traction, you can leave it in place.

4 screws release the body from the chassis, and the body breaks down as shown in the photo below. Be careful when you do remove the body, as this car is lighted and you do not want to break any of the wiring inside. You have room to remove the body for oiling and to perform any chassis modifications you may see fit. You can now see the motor in its sidewinder configuration, along with the rest of the wiring for the polarity switch (for changing direction) and front guide. The gears are made of brass, and believe it or not, they are very smooth and quiet. I have never had a gear failure in any of the 1/24th scale models from Carrera, and I am sure this car will carry on this tradition.  This guide is a little loose in its mount and could benefit from some modification to get it to sit flush with the rails. My recently acquired TSRF guides will come in handy, and look for this article coming soon. However, as it sits it runs just fine, and to be fair, most all the 1/24 cars are this way, and we have raced many hours on them with no problems.

Performance is a term I sometimes hasten to use because what dictates performance for me, may not for another. I will simply say that I think this car is absolutely FUN to drive. Yes, you CAN run these models on less than the 18 volts recommended, in fact, I prefer them this way. Running at 15.87 volts from our LOKO DPS 400-GL 40 amp power supply, this model has decent acceleration and throttle response is smooth. There really isn't any hard braking action to speak of, but I have found I like it this way for these larger models, and once you get used to it, it can be great fun leading the tail out into the corners and drifting all the way around.

If you like these larger models like we do, I can safely say you should add this car to your current stable. It is fun to drive, like a slot car should be, and adds a nice change of pace in your home racing. Try one and see for yourself.
